New little library opens on Tommy Todd Village Green

A new chapter has begun for book lovers in Haughton Green with the installation of a Little Library on Tommy Todd Village Green, bringing reading back into the heart of the community.

Haughton Green Little Library was officially launched on Friday 20 February after residents, community groups and businesses rallied together to turn the idea into reality. Through fundraising, donations and hands-on construction support, the community successfully reached its £2,250 target last November.

Supported by Tameside Council, the free book exchange allows residents to take a book and leave one in return. While visitors are not required to donate in order to borrow, contributions are encouraged to help keep the shelves stocked for others to enjoy.

Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Little Library operates on trust. Users are asked to care for the books, check back regularly to discover new titles and even attach short reviews to books they return, helping fellow readers find their next great read.

The project was spearheaded by local resident Sam, who was inspired to act after noticing the village was feeling the loss of its local libraries.

“Books have always been a meaningful part of my life,” she said. “I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by them thanks to my parents’ bookshop, and that early access shaped my love of reading.

“Not everyone has that opportunity. Many people face barriers - time, transport, mobility, or cost - that make accessing books harder than it should be.

“A free, 24/7 community library felt like a simple, powerful way to bring books back within reach.

“I believe books have the power to bring people closer, and I’m proud that Haughton Green Little Library will be a lasting addition that grows and evolves with all of us.”

Sam said she was overwhelmed by the level of support from local residents, community groups, national and local businesses, and housing associations, all of whom contributed to the fundraising effort and practical build.

Organisations backing the project include Tameside Council, Bramhall’s Surfacing LTD, Travis Perkins, Irwell Valley Housing, Jigsaw Homes, Haughton Green Craft Club, Findel, The Works, MDP, Old Tom’s Workshop and the local Slimming World group.

The Little Library aims to create a welcoming space that encourages conversation, connection and community pride. It is designed to motivate children to read at home, support lifelong learning and promote sustainability by giving books a second life.

Councillor Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, praised the initiative.

“It’s heartwarming to see the collective effort which has turned this incredible idea into a reality,” she said.

“This social value project will promote literacy and learning for people of all ages, as well as make reading more accessible, strengthen community connections, and reduce isolation.

“I look forward to seeing Haughton Green utilise and cherish this new addition to the area.”
