Housing society installs lifesaving defibrillators in Stalybridge and Hyde

Residents living in housing managed by Longdendale Housing Society Ltd can now benefit from lifesaving equipment on their doorstep, thanks to the installation of two new defibrillators.

The Tameside-based social housing provider, which has been operating since the early 1970s, has fitted the devices at its two sites: Castle Hall Close, beside Cheetham Park in Stalybridge, and The Woodlands on Werneth Road, Hyde. Together, the sites provide 87 one and two-bedroom homes at affordable rents, predominantly for people aged over 55.

The defibrillators have been installed as part of the society’s ongoing programme of maintenance and refurbishment. Abbott Fire, a local supplier, carried out the installation and is also providing two training sessions at each site. These sessions will allow residents and members of the wider community to familiarise themselves with the equipment and gain confidence in using it.

A defibrillator delivers a controlled shock to the heart in the event of cardiac arrest, potentially saving a life in those crucial first moments before emergency services arrive.

Chair of Longdendale Housing Society, Dave Sweeton, explained the decision: “Following reports of a local accident where a defibrillator was effectively used, the board decided that we would provide and maintain two defibrillators at our sites for not only our own residents to use, but for members of the local community should the need arise.

“I am also very proud that we have included a training course free of charge for local residents and businesses to attend, which will help them feel at ease and confident in their use.”

The society is run by a board of trustees, including tenant representatives from both sites, alongside advisors from Stalybridge property experts W.C. Dawsons and Oldham-based accountants Seftons.
