Droylsden Scouts launch annual bedding plant fundraiser as hut improvements take root

250th Droylsden Scout group is once again inviting the community to support its much-loved annual bedding plant fundraiser, an event that has been running for more than four decades.

The group, based on Ellen Street, has officially opened orders for this year’s bedding plants, with the final deadline set for Sunday 19 April 2026. Residents can place their orders online via their website, continuing a tradition that has helped sustain local scouting for generations.

The bedding plant weekend remains the group’s biggest fundraising event of the year. Proceeds go directly towards maintaining the scout hut and funding a wide range of activities for young people across Droylsden, from outdoor adventures to skills-based learning and community engagement.

This year’s fundraiser comes on the back of significant improvements to the scout hut, thanks to a grant from Better Youth Spaces. The funding has allowed the group to create a warmer, more welcoming environment for its members, who range in age from 4 to 18, as well as the dedicated volunteers who give their time each week.

Upgrades include a new heating system, improved loft insulation, draught excluders, and energy-efficient LED lighting. These changes are already making a noticeable difference, ensuring the space is comfortable, sustainable, and fit for year-round use.

The Better Youth Spaces initiative is part of a £30.5 million government-backed programme aimed at strengthening youth services in priority areas across England. The fund is administered by Social Investment Business in partnership with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, supporting organisations with refurbishments and equipment to enhance youth provision.

Nick Temple, CEO of Social Investment Business, said: “We are excited to be partnering with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to support youth services in priority areas in England and create ‘better youth spaces’ for young people. Through a combination of funding refurbishment projects and providing new equipment, it will bring opportunities for young people to participate in a whole range of enrichment activities - across sports, music and cultural activities. The fund will also help to expand access, create safer spaces, and make youth services more sustainable. This is a real boost for youth services in some of the communities which need it most, creating lasting impact for young people’s wellbeing.”

Leaders at the Droylsden group say they are delighted to have secured the funding and are already planning a community celebration event, led by their young members, to mark the improvements.

The group continues to welcome new members across all sections, offering opportunities for young people aged 4 to 18 to get involved, learn new skills, and build lasting friendships.
