Bereavement services team abseil for children’s charity

Tameside Council bereavement officers Ashley Gibson and Andrew Cochrane will join colleagues from across Greater Manchester in a 172ft sponsored abseil to raise funds for the charity Once Upon a Smile.

The charity provides vital emotional and practical support to bereaved children, young people and their families, helping them navigate some of the most difficult times in their lives.

The pair signed up for the challenge, which will involve abseiling down the Trafford Palazzo tower at the Trafford Centre on 27 June 2026, alongside fellow professionals who support families every day through loss and grief.

Ashley said: “I first became aware of Once Upon a Smile through bereavement services across Greater Manchester, and visiting their centre really showed me the incredible support they offer. Seeing messages from the children they’ve helped was so heartwarming and highlighted the difference they make during such difficult times.
“I’ve never done anything like this abseil before and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous, but I really hope we can reach our fundraising target and help more children get the support they need during some of the toughest moments of their lives.”

Andrew added: “This is a terrific charity supporting bereaved children across the country, helping them through a very difficult time in their young lives, and I feel honoured to play even a small part in supporting their work.
“Abseiling 172 feet down the Palazzo tower wasn’t something I ever imagined doing, but it will be a great day, a real challenge, and hopefully a lot of fun. Most importantly, we’re hoping to raise a substantial amount for a fabulous, hard-working charity.”

The coordinated effort highlights the commitment of bereavement professionals to supporting communities beyond their day-to-day roles, while raising awareness of the specialist help available to families experiencing grief.

Cllr Laura Boyle, Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods, said: “Ashley and Andrew’s willingness to take on this challenge is a fantastic example of the compassion and dedication shown by our bereavement services team.
“They support residents during some of the most difficult moments in their lives, and it’s inspiring to see them going even further to help families and young people who need it most.”

Once Upon a Smile works across the North West, offering counselling, therapies, and tailored support to help children and families rebuild their lives after bereavement.
