Work begins to restore Ashton Town Hall’s steps

Tameside Council has announced that work on restoring the steps of Ashton Town Hall has begun. This is after planning consent was given for the next phase of work.

Work to restore the Town Hall steps is part of the ongoing £19.87 million Levelling Up funding to regenerate Ashton town centre which is most visible with the changes being made to the outdoor marketplace.

The aim with the Town Hall steps is to restore them back to their 1840 design, with concrete replaced with natural sandstone, the addition of handrails with lights to improve accessibility, brass step inlays, refurbished steel gates and bird deterrents, and the reinstatement of historic cannons on the plinths.

In order for the work to be undertaken safely, the pedestrian walkway in front of the Town Hall will be moved, with clear signage and access to surrounding businesses maintained throughout.

Councillor Stephen Homer, Executive Cabinet Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, said: “We’re thrilled that planning approval has been granted for this important heritage project marking the start of the vision for the future. The Town Hall steps will once again become a proud focal point for Ashton, combining historic character with modern accessibility.”
