The Tameside churches holding special services to remember the Queen

St Mary's Church in Newton, Hyde

Churches across Tameside are opening their doors and welcoming parishioners to special services following the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Many also have books of condolence for people to leave special messages and memories of Her Majesty. Here are some of the special services:

Ashton

The Parish of the Good Shepherd in Ashton will hold services of prayer and reflection remembering her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday, September 11 at: 9.30am St Gabriel’s, 9.30am St James, 11am St Michael’s and 11am St Peter’s. Everyone is welcome. A book of condolence in each church will also be available.

Christ Church - there will be no Sunday School this Sunday, but families are requested to attend the church service at 10.30am instead.

Denton

Christ Church, Denton, will be open Friday and Saturday 10am-4pm for prayer and quiet time at this sad time of national mourning.

St George’s, Dane Bank, Denton, will be open Friday between 1-3pm for private prayer and peace.

St Mary’s Church, Haughton Green, everyone is invited to a short service at 6pm (Friday) to share the sadness of the death of Her Majesty the Queen. There will be a chance to chat afterwards. Everyone is also warmly invited to Sunday’s service at 10.30am where the church will be giving thanks for the Queen’s faithfulness. If you wish to leave flowers in remembrance, you can leave them along either side of the path into the church building - these will remain until after her funeral.

Droylsden

Fairfield Moravian Church and Settlement will hold a morning worship at 10.30am with a children’s service on Sunday. The 1-5pm heritage open day at Fairfield is still going ahead as planned. Everyone welcome.

Dukinfield

St John’s Church will be open for all to come, pray, light a candle in memory, and sign a book of condolence on Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 10am-4pm with opportunities after the services on Sunday. There will be special services to remember her late Majesty on Sunday at 9am (without children’s groups) and 10.30am (with children’s groups). All are welcome.

St Mark’s Church will be open for personal prayer and reflection on Friday from noon to 4pm; Saturday from noon to 3pm. You are invited to add your respects to the public online condolence book at cofe.io/HMTheQueen.

Hyde

St George’s Church, Hyde - there is a book of condolence in the porch of St George’s Church. The church is open Friday from noon-3pm if you would like to sign it or leave a message. The church will also mark her passing during the Sunday service at 10.45am.

St Mary’s Church Newton with Flowery Field will be open for all to pray, light candles and sign a book of condolence from 10am-4pm on Friday. There will also be a service to remember and give thanks for the life of the late Queen at 6pm on Friday.

Mossley

St George’s Church will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 1-4pm on Sunday for the Heritage Open Days.  Everyone is welcome to go along and pay their respects to HM The Queen.

Stalybridge

Holy Trinity Church will be open Friday between 10am and 4pm for all to reflect and pray, light a candle and sign a book of condolence in remembrance of her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth II.

St Paul’s Church is open for private prayer 2-6pm on Friday. There is opportunity to light a candle and to sign a book of condolence. These are in the Chapel of Remembrance which is within the main church. 

St George’s Church, Huddersfield Road, join in the Sunday services to remember Her Majesty at 10.30am.

There are also books of condolence at: Ashton Library at Tameside One, Audenshaw’s Ryecroft Hall, Denton Library, Droylsden Library, Dukinfield Town Hall, Hattersley Library, Hyde Library, Mossley’s George Lawton Hall and Stalybridge Library.

Floral tributes will also be accepted at the front of Dukinfield Town Hall, Hyde Town Hall, Denton Town Hall at Jubilee Square outside the library, Stalybridge Civic Hall at the square in front and Tameside One outside the library.
