The importance of cancer screenings

Ashton Primary Care Network set up a stall on Ashton indoor market recently, informing the public on the importance of screening.

The team are aiming to educate people on the different types of screening that are available out there on the NHS. The screenings on offer include cervical, bowel and breast cancer screening.

The bowel cancer screening kit can be done from the comfort of your own home and these kits will be sent out in the post every two years when you reach the age of 60 however, the NHS are lowering the minimum age boundary. The kit comes with instructions and then this is sent off to the labs. For the cervical and breast screening, this must be done elsewhere such as the breast screening bus which is temporarily based at Ashton Primary Care Network on Old Street in Ashton.

Nurse Gemma Douglas reiterated the importance of these free screenings, she said “Early detection of cancer leads to better outcomes, these kits can save lives … if you’re nervous about the screenings, you can talk to a healthcare professional and they can talk you through the process”.

The team will be at Asda on Cavendish Street on 21 August for another screening campaign.
