The new £5 million psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Tameside has been named Walkerwood by patients and staff.
Opening soon, the unit at Tameside Hospital will support men experiencing mental health distress.
Named after a local beauty spot, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust says the unit aims to reflect the therapy-based recovery approach that’ll be offered to patients, including access to an on-site gym, therapy kitchen, garden, and activity space.
Once patients have moved into the new unit, the current Stockport PICU will be refurbished for women needing psychiatric intensive care.
This will be named Woodbank after a nearby historical park and is expected to open in spring 2023.
