A woman from Tameside has completed her quest to run 100 marathons in 100 days across India, in memory of her late father.

41-year-old Hannah Cox, who lives on a canal boat in Ashton-under-Lyne, completed the gruelling feat earlier this week when she arrived in Kolkata, the birthplace of her father, Deric.

Following his death in 2011, Hannah has been on a mission to get closer to her family’s roots, and became captivated when she discovered the Inland Customs Line – a 2,458-mile barrier across India built by the British Empire.

Upon hearing about the country-wide route – which was created in the 19th century to enforce a salt tax – Hannah dreamed about travelling across it, originally planning to backpack but deciding to run it instead.

After starting the route last October in Fazilka, on the India Pakistan border, the Tameside entrepreneur reached her destination on Monday – her father’s childhood home in Kolkata, on the India Bangladesh border.

This achievement is made even more astonishing by the fact Hannah only began running in 2024, before embarking on a rigorous 18-month training plan to prepare her for the event.

The feat wasn’t possible without its obstacles, with Hannah running a full week of marathons while suffering from acute gastroenteritis, as well as tackling scoliosis and an autoimmune disease.

The inspirational athlete also lost an astounding 11kg across the 100 days.

Ahead of the challenge, the 41-year-old set up a Crowdfunder named Project Salt Run, with the aim of raising £1 million for charity, with the total currently standing at a whopping £80,000.
