Tameside residents urged to ensure they are registered to vote as a hat-trick of elections looks likely in 2024

With three elections likely next year, Tameside residents have been urged to ensure they are registered to vote.

Elections for Tameside Council and for the Greater Manchester metro mayor are already set for Thursday, May 2. It’s also felt to be almost certain that the Prime Minister will call a general election as one has to be held by the end of January, 2025.

It’s always worth checking you’re registered, but particularly if you’ve recently moved – especially to a new-build property – or if you’re approaching your 18th birthday. Research has shown movers are less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time.

For more information call 0161 342 8355, email elections@tameside.gov.uk. Registering is a quick and simple process. All you’ll need is your date of birth and National Insurance number.

Tameside Council’s electoral registration officer, Sandra Stewart, said: “The next 12 months are likely to be as important as it gets in terms of elections. Voters will be able to influence all levels of decision-making but if they want their voice to be heard on issues affecting us locally, regionally and nationally, they must be registered.

“Getting registered can be done very swiftly and very easily at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. I would strongly encourage anyone with any doubts to do so, and especially if they have moved recently or are approaching their 18th birthday.”
