People visiting Tameside Hospital recently will have noticed the extensive work taking place on the Accident and Emergency Department redevelopment.
Construction on the £20 million redevelopment started in May last year and is due to be completed in spring 2024.
Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Ashton-based hospital, say the work will "create the type of modern emergency and urgent care facility that patients deserve and need".
It adds that the revamped facility will change issues of overcrowding and patients being nursed and assessed in unsuitable areas, as well as the current department being constrained by physical space.
There was a landmark moment last week when the steel structure, which will eventually house the waiting area, was installed. You can see a short video which captured the installation at the top of the page.
A&E provides 24 hour emergency care and treatment for all illnesses and injuries. It has a specific paediatric service, and daytime minor injuries and dressings clinics. The service is still in operation throughout the building process.
The redevelopment has been funded by a Government grant, approved jointly by the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England and NHS Improvement.
