Tameside community icon receives lifetime achievement award

Tameside community icon Mohammed Mizanur Rahman Mizan receives lifetime achievement award at prestigious civic reception,

A prestigious civic reception was held in Chester to honour the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Sherin Akhtar, alongside a distinguished group of individuals recognised for their exceptional service and contributions to public life.

The event, organised by founding chairman Monchab Ali of the Chester North Wales Bangladesh Youth Association (CANBYA), brought together civic dignitaries, community leaders, and residents in a powerful celebration of leadership, service, and community impact.

A Special Honour for Tameside

Among the illustrious group of honourees, a special spotlight was shone on Mohammed Mizanur Rahman Mizan, who was presented with a Lifetime Outstanding Achievement Award. Notably, Mr. Mizan was the only recipient representing Tameside at the event, further solidifying his status as a community icon for his home borough.

A former international hockey player, businessman, and philanthropist, Mr. Mizan was recognised for his decades of dedication to community development and humanitarian work. As the founder of the Just Help Foundation, his efforts have restored sight to thousands in Bangladesh, while his leadership as Chairman of the BBCCI (North West) continues to bridge the gap between business and community service in the UK.

Celebrating Civic Leadership

The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Sherin Akhtar, was also recognised for her outstanding commitment to public service, inclusive leadership, and dedication to strengthening communities across Chester. In her acceptance speech, she expressed heartfelt gratitude, emphasising the collective nature of her journey.

“This honour is not just mine it belongs to the many people, communities, and colleagues who have supported and inspired me,” she said. “Public service is about people listening, understanding, and working together to build stronger, more inclusive communities.”

A Distinguished Roll of Honour

The evening also recognised a number of prominent figures for their outstanding contributions to public and community service. Joining the Lord Mayor and Mr. Mizan in receiving honours were:

• Councillor Abdul Jabbar

• Councillor Shibley Alam, Mayor of Tameside

• Anwar Ali OBE

Each recipient has demonstrated remarkable dedication within their respective fields ranging from civic leadership and social enterprise to grassroots community development making a lasting impact both locally and beyond.

The reception served not only as a celebration of individual achievement but also as a powerful reminder of the importance of service, unity, and representation. It highlighted the vital role played by diverse communities in shaping the social and civic fabric of the United Kingdom.

The evening concluded with a shared sense of pride and inspiration, reinforcing a collective commitment to continue building stronger, more inclusive communities for future generations.
