Summer camp raises Clarendon Sixth Form student's Oxbridge aspirations

A Classics summer camp has raised Oxbridge aspirations for Clarendon Sixth Form College student Charlie Clark-Smith.

Charlie, who is studying A-level classics, English literature and History, has been inspired to apply for a place at Oxford or Cambridge University after attending a summer camp for young classicists.

The Joint Association of Classical Teachers (JACT) camp, which took place over two weeks at Bryanston Boarding School in Dorset, included seminars, lectures and talks by leading academics in the field; with a focus on ancient Greek language and culture.

Charlie was unsure about applying to attend the prestigious universities; however, their fears were soon allayed after picking up tips and advice from university lecturers and fellow students at the JACT camp.

The event, which takes place each year, is designed to give sixth form students an experience of university life and study within classics.

There were also a wide range of extracurricular activities to take part in or see during the camp such as reading competitions, team sports, an opera and an ancient Greek play hosted by students.

Charlie said: “I was really unsure about applying to Oxford or Cambridge university because I didn’t think it would suit me, but after meeting people who are passionate about classics just like me and hearing their advice it has changed my views. It was great to be in an academic setting that was professional but also where you were able to share your ideas. I really enjoyed the whole experience and am definitely thinking about going back again next year. It was amazing.”

Jonathan Miller, classical civilisation teacher at Clarendon Sixth Form College, recommended the summer camp to Charlie after their passion for the subject became clear.

Jonathan said: “Charlie’s passion is very clearly classics and languages and this comes across in their studies. The JACT summer camp has really helped them to focus her ambitions for the future and given them a whole new point of view, which is fantastic. I believe that they will excel whilst at university and I believe that they are more than capable of studying at a top university.”
