A new and inspiring venture is opening its doors in Stalybridge next week. Students from the local Works4U College are preparing to launch Relove and Reuse, an “opportunity shop” designed by and for young people across Tameside.
Business Manager James Mackie explains that the store offers affordable clothing, shoes, and accessories aimed at teenagers and young adults “We wanted to bridge the gap between high-end fashion and affordability,” he said. “Rather than spending designer prices, people can come here for great value and the whole place is arranged and run by young people themselves.”
The project, part of the Works4U learning programme, gives students valuable retail experience. “They’ve done everything from refurbishing and fitting out the shop to setting prices and managing stock,” James added. “It’s all about gaining skills while building confidence and independence.”
Lisa Buckley, Area and Community Leader at Works4U, said she was “completely proud” of what the students have achieved. “We’ve taken inspiration from places like Emmaus and Afflecks Palace to create something trendy and fresh for the town centre,” she said. “This is an opportunity for anyone in Tameside to shop affordably while supporting young people.”
The initiative also carries an environmental message. With more than 70,000 tonnes of waste sent to landfill in Tameside last year, Relove and Reuse aims to promote sustainability through recycling and upcycling. Students will handle everything from washing and steaming clothes to researching prices and running online sales. Plans are already in motion to sell items through Vinted, eBay, and even TikTok Shop.
Student Jayden said he’s excited about the online opportunities ahead. “We’ll be going live on TikTok to show what we’re selling and tell people where to find us,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to speak to a large audience, this is the perfect chance.”
Although Relove and Reuse is not a charity shop, proceeds go directly back into supporting students’ education, funding activities, field trips, and extra support when needed. Donations of pre-loved clothing and accessories are warmly welcomed. “If it’s still got life left in it, we’ll make use of it,” Lisa said. “It doesn’t matter if it needs cleaning, that’s all part of the learning process.”
The shop will host its official opening on Tuesday, 18 November at 10am at 63–65 Grosvenor Street, Stalybridge. It will operate as a cashless store, accepting card payments only.
Donations can be dropped off in person or arranged by calling 07934 582 645.
