Stalybridge canal lock gates to be replaced

Canal & River Trust has announced that a lock in Stalybridge town centre will be getting new gates this winter.

The new locks will form part of a nationwide programme called “15 Locks for 15 Years”, which will see 15 locks across the country replaced. The “15 Years” refers to the 15 years of support offered by the Postcode Lottery.

As part of the initiative, the top and bottom gates of Lock 6 West, located on Armentieres Square in Stalybridge, will be replaced. Brand new, bespoke lock gates will be fitted on the lock on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal that passes through the centre of Stalybridge.

Lock gates are fundamental to the operation of canals, but due to constant exposure to the elements and daily use by boaters, they typically only last around 25 years before requiring replacement.

The allocation of funding for the replacement of these lock gates illustrates the transformative impact of Postcode Lottery players’ support over the past 15 years, helping the Canal & River Trust to care for more than 2,000 miles of waterways across the United Kingdom.
