Snooker champ pots charity cash

A teenage boy has completed a mammoth fundraising event for charity.

James Bradley, 13, took on a snookerthon challenge at Hyde Snooker and Social Club and raised more than £1,800.

The Hyde schoolboy has been performing well in recent national competitions, usually playing against snooker players a couple of years older.

His father, gardener Neil Bradley, has been employed by Roy Bate BEM to keep his garden well manicured for more than 10 years.

Roy and a team of volunteers run a charity, Forget-Me-Not Buddies Tameside, which supports families who have a member dealing with dementia.

The charity runs regular social events for families, offering advice and running regular days out for both cared-for people and their carers.

James and dad Neil decided the charity deserved their support, which led to the idea of a marathon 12 hour fundraiser being developed.

Snooker superstars, who know James very well, offered their support, by providing a signed cue, balls and photographs to be raffled off at the event.

Local businesses also provided prizes for a tombola and cakes to be sold as refreshments.

Roy and the volunteers from the charity, also attended the event, where snooker players were invited to play James for a game, in return for a donation.

Anyone wanting to make a donation, but unable to attend, was able to do so via an online page.

Coaches, who help James to develop his game, also attended; alongside 91-year-old Reg Davies and local coach Adam Longly.

Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Taf Sharif, also went along to offer her support, saying how proud she was of the young man’s efforts and how much he was of a role model for others to succeed in any sport through hard work and dedication.

She also said that James would be invited to visit the Mayor’s Parlour in recognition for what his achievements.

Not satisfied with a mere 12 hours, in which he played 30 frames, James played an extra hour to take on his mum and two sisters.

James and dad Neil returned to the club the next day to draw the raffle and announce that more than £1,800 had been raised for dementia support in Tameside.

Neil expressed his pride for his son’s achievement and thanked everyone who had supported and donated.
