Shree Bharatiya Mandal Indian Association of Tameside Celebrates Republic Day and Opens New Community Polytunnel

Shree Bharatiya Mandal marked India’s Republic Day with a vibrant flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by the official opening of a new community polytunnel funded through generous donations from local supporters.

The event brought together donors, volunteers, community leaders, and families to celebrate both national pride and a significant step forward in community development.

The morning began with the hoisting of the Indian national flag, honouring the values of democracy, equality, and unity that define the Republic of India. Attendees reflected on the importance of these principles and the contributions of those who shaped the nation’s constitution.

Following the ceremony, guests proceeded to the newly installed polytunnel, a project designed to support community wellbeing, sustainable growing, and educational activities. The ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling recognised the donors and volunteers whose contributions made the project possible.

The polytunnel will serve as a shared space for growing fresh vegetables and fruits for Meals On Wheel services, teaching young people about sustainability, and bringing community members together through hands-on activities.

Speaking at the event, organiser Manhar Taylor expressed gratitude to all who supported the initiative and highlighted the importance of community collaboration. “This project shows what we can achieve when people come together with generosity and purpose. The polytunnel will help us grow food, but more importantly, it will help us grow connection, learning, and opportunity for our community.”

"This project is not just about growing produce; it is about growing opportunity, connection, and pride. It reflects the spirit of service that defines our association and the wider Tameside community."

The Indian Association of Tameside thanked all donors, volunteers, and attendees for their continued support and reaffirmed its commitment to building inclusive, community-centred initiatives throughout the year.

Manhar Taylor Trustee and organiser added, “Our new polytunnel is more than a structure,  it’s a symbol of what a caring community can build together. We are grateful to everyone who helped turn this vision into reality."
