Safety improvement works on Darnton Road and Ridge Hill Lane

The latest work to make Tameside’s streets safer for all users begins next week.

Tameside Council will be carrying out highway safety improvement works on Darnton Road, Ashton, and Ridge Hill Lane, Stalybridge, between Stamford Street and Astley Road, from Monday 20 July to Friday 25 September.

The scheme also includes improvements at the junction of Springs Lane and St George's Street in Stalybridge and forms part of the council's ongoing Highway Safety Programme, which supports Greater Manchester's Vision Zero ambition to eliminate deaths and life-changing injuries on the road network by 2040.

The works will include:

• extending the existing 20mph speed limit on Darnton Road to a point on Ridge Hill Lane south of Harrison Street
• installation of raised junctions
• new footways
• pedestrian crossing points to help slow traffic and provide safer informal crossing points for anyone walking or wheeling

Works will take place on Monday to Saturday between 9am and 4pm.

Access for general traffic will be maintained wherever it is safe to do so through standard traffic management measures. If temporary road closures are required, signed diversion routes will be in place.

Access for residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained at all times.
