Rotary backs Stayley Cricket Club ahead of historic Lord’s Final

Club President Graham Fitton with representatives of Stayley Cricket Club

Stayley Cricket Club have received a timely boost ahead of their biggest game in history, thanks to a generous donation from the Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club.

The Millbrook-based side are preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime appearance at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday, 21 September 2025, where they will take on reigning champions Foxton Granta in the final of the prestigious Voneus Village Cup.

In support of the club’s remarkable journey, the Rotary Club donated £400 to assist with preparations for the big day. Rotary Club President Graham Fitton visited Stayley this week to meet with players and volunteers and offer words of encouragement.

“It was a pleasure to meet the team at Stayley Cricket and to show our support as they represent our community on such a prestigious stage,” said Mr Fitton.

The donation will help cover travel and logistical costs as the team gears up to compete at the iconic 'home of cricket', where a large and enthusiastic crowd is expected.

Stayley’s rise has been nothing short of inspirational. Since entering the competition in 2021, the club has gone from strength to strength, emerging as winners of the Cheshire & Clwyd regional group to secure their place in the national final.

Their opponents, Cambridgeshire-based Foxton Granta, are among the most successful village sides in recent years, promising a thrilling contest between two deserving finalists.

The Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club, part of the international Rotary network, plays a vital role in supporting grassroots initiatives across Tameside. Their support of Stayley Cricket Club is part of a wider commitment to helping local organisations thrive.

The club expressed pride in backing Stayley and extended its best wishes for success in the final.

Stayley Cricket Club will now turn their focus to final preparations as they get ready to fly the flag for Millbrook — and all of Tameside — on cricket’s grandest stage.
