People across Tameside who are autistic, along with their families and carers, are being invited to a major support event offering advice, activities and opportunities to shape local services.

The “Proud To Be Me” autism information event will take place on Thursday 23 April at Oxford Park Community Sports Centre in Ashton-under-Lyne. Organised by Tameside Council, the free drop-in event will run from 12pm to 7pm and is open to people of all ages.

More than 30 organisations will be in attendance, providing information, guidance and support on a wide range of topics. Attendees will be able to speak directly with council teams and partner organisations from across the borough, helping them better understand what services are available.

Among the organisations attending are Routes to Work, Tameside and Glossop Autism Assessment Team, Tameside Carers Centre, Thrive with JoJo, Tameside Arts and Homes for All.

The bi-annual event is being held as part of Autism Acceptance Month and welcomes anyone who is autistic, including those awaiting diagnosis or who self-identify, as well as their families and carers.

Alongside the information marketplace, visitors can take part in a variety of optional activities throughout the day. These include cooking sessions, yoga, cycling, arts and crafts, and even a visit to a pony patch.

To ensure the event is accessible and inclusive, a sensory and breakout room will be available, offering a quiet space for those who need it. Health and wellbeing consultations will also be on offer.

The event will also focus on key issues affecting autistic people in Tameside, including raising awareness and understanding, improving access to education and transitions, supporting employment opportunities, and tackling health inequalities.

Organisers are keen to hear directly from attendees, with opportunities throughout the day for people to share their experiences and feedback on how local support services can be improved.

Joe Kelly, Interim Strategic Director of Adult Social Care & Health, said: “I’m delighted that Proud To Be Me is back, following the success of the last event with over 300 people attending and accessing valuable support.

“Not only is there a wealth of information and resources available, I also encourage those who attend to get involved with the important discussions and feedback opportunities.

“We want to help as many people as possible feel heard and supported. Please come along and join us at this fantastic event.”
