Prime Minister's rescue dog shines spotlight on Dogs Trust in Tameside

Animal welfare charity Dogs Trust hopes that Andy Burnham's rescue dog Axel can continue to highlight the importance of giving unwanted dogs a second chance.

Axel, a Bichon-Poo adopted by the new Prime Minister Mr Burnham and his wife from Dogs Trust Shrewsbury in 2017, has become one of the country's best-known rescue dogs by virtue of Burnham’s new role as PM.

Dog's Trust Manchester, which Burnham visited while Mayor of Greater Manchester, hopes that Axel's story provides an opportunity to encourage more people to consider rehoming a dog, while also keeping animal welfare firmly on the Government's agenda.

The message has particular relevance in Tameside, where Dogs Trust operates its Manchester rehoming centre in Denton. The centre regularly cares for dogs looking for new homes and supports prospective owners from across Greater Manchester.

Axel spent just 12 days in the charity's care before finding his forever home with the Burnham family. Staff at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury remember the puppy as friendly and affectionate, and say his journey from rescue dog to the Prime Minister's family pet demonstrates how quickly finding the right match can change a dog's life.

Dogs Trust is urging the Government to build on its animal welfare commitments by progressing measures including stronger action against the illegal puppy trade, banning electric shock collars and supporting responsible dog ownership through the Dog Ownership Guide (DOG), developed with the RSPCA.

Owen Sharp, chief executive of Dogs Trust, said: "Axel has come a long way since Andy Burnham adopted him from Dogs Trust in 2017 and we are delighted to see what an important pooch he has become.

"We also hope the Prime Minister will use his new role to champion policies that improve dog welfare and help build a better future for dogs and their owners across the UK.

"Fingers crossed that Axel's story will inspire more people to consider adopting a rescue dog and give another pet the chance to find their own happy ever after."
