Police officer charged after man was tasered in Dukinfield

A Greater Manchester Police officer has been charged with assault after a man was tasered at a house in Dukinfield. 

Police Constable Philip Smith has been charged with Section 47 assault, occasioning actual bodily harm and the 46-year-old is set to appear at Preston Magistrates' Court on Thursday (13 August). 

The Crown Prosecution Service decided to proceed with the charge after an investigation was carried out by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which concluded in June 2019. 

A 29-year-old man was tasered at an address in Dukinfield back in June 2018, after police attended following reports concerning his welfare. 

In a statement, the IOPC said: "A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer has been charged with assault following an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation.

"This follows an incident in which a 29-year-old man was tasered, at an address in Dukinfield, following a report concerning his welfare in June 2018.

"We completed our investigation in June 2019 and referred our evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) who made the decision to charge Police Constable Phillip Smith, aged 46, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (Section 47)."
