A planning application has been submitted that, if approved, will pave the way for vital improvement works at Denton Town Hall, helping to preserve one of the town’s most historically significant and much-loved buildings for future generations.
The first phase of work will focus on the demolition of an unstable single-storey side extension on the western side of the building, adjacent to Victoria Park. The extension, which was added between 1955 and 1965, is not part of the Town Hall’s original 1889 structure and has suffered from severe structural movement and subsidence. Cracking throughout the extension, both inside and out, has raised concerns about the long-term stability of the landmark building.
Following a detailed assessment by Seven Architecture, appointed as Conservation Architect in September 2025, the extension was condemned as unsafe. The firm’s review identified essential remedial works needed to secure the future of the building and ensure it can continue to serve the community.
Demolishing the defective addition will allow critical underpinning and structural repairs to the main Town Hall, ensuring its continued use as a public library and civic space. The demolition will be carried out with care to protect the building’s heritage, with salvaged bricks and materials reused wherever possible to maintain the hall’s historic character.
Further planned works will include drainage improvements, tree management, and ground levelling to help prevent future subsidence and safeguard the building’s foundations.
Councillor Stephen Homer, Tameside Council Executive Member (Towns, Transport and Connectivity), said: “We recognise the historical and communal importance of Denton Town Hall and are committed to securing its future. The removal of the unsafe extension is a necessary step to protect the integrity of the building and ensure it remains a safe and accessible space for the community. This forms part of our wider regeneration plans for Denton, supported by Government funding, to make the town a place everyone is proud to call home.”
The proposed works form part of Tameside Council’s ongoing commitment to preserving local heritage while delivering modern, functional community spaces.
