Emergency services closed a junction of the M60 after a phone mast caught fire in the early hours of the morning.
Fire crews were called to the scene at 4am on Sunday morning, when flames were spotted coming from the 15 metre-tall 5G mast facing a Ford dealership on Manchester Road in Ashton.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Two fire engines from Ashton and Stalybridge stations were mobilised to the incident.
“The road has been closed in both directions as a precaution.
“Firefighters are making the area safe, with GMFRS crews and fire investigation officers still at the scene.”
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said their "enquiries are ongoing".
They expect junction 23 and the stretch of Manchester Road between it and the BP garage to reopen at around lunchtime.
Traffic is being diverted in the meantime, with Stagecoach’s 216 bus instead running along Moss Way and Stockport Road.
Metrolink services are unaffected.
