Tameside Trading Standards is investigating a company which has been passing off the council logo without permission on its marketing materials.
A company trading as Tameside Drives and Patios is understood to have dropped leaflets through the doors of thousands of homes in the borough, advertising its services with closely similar council branding that could easily mislead people into thinking the leaflet was either from or approved by the council.
Trading standards launched an investigation after several residents contacted the council about the leaflets, questioning whether they were from the local authority.
Officers contacted the company to ask it to remove the Tameside Council like logo and branding from its communications and marketing materials.
However, in the meantime, the council is warning residents who may have already received a leaflet that the company is not linked to the council or its services.
A Tameside Council spokesperson said: “A quick glance at the leaflets could easily convince someone that they are advertising a council service or a least a service that has been endorsed by us, which could give them false faith in the offer. However we do not have links with this company and cannot endorse any of their products or services.
"Investigations are continuing but we want people to be aware and clear that this is not a council service or product – or one that has been approved or recommended by the council - before they enlist this company’s services."
