Partnership helps shape more inclusive streets across Tameside

A new partnership between Tameside Council and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is helping to create more inclusive streets and public spaces across the borough.

Councillors and council officers are working closely with the charity to better understand the needs of blind and partially sighted residents, ensuring future developments and infrastructure improvements are accessible for all.

On Tuesday 7 October, council staff joined RNIB representatives for a street audit in Ashton town centre, walking a route through key pedestrian areas and transport hubs. The walk examined crossings, pavements and busy highways, highlighting both good practice and areas where older infrastructure could be improved.

To gain a deeper insight into the experiences of people with sight loss, participants wore ‘simulated specs’ – glasses designed to replicate different visual impairments such as tunnel vision and cataracts. This hands-on experience offered a powerful perspective on the everyday challenges faced by blind and partially sighted individuals navigating public spaces.

The session was led by Terri Balon, RNIB’s Northwest representative, who introduced the charity’s Key Principles of Inclusive Street Design. These principles include features such as accessible crossings, unobstructed footways, clear colour contrast, and tactile paving – all of which can make a meaningful difference for people living with sight loss.

Councillor Stephen Homer, Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, praised the initiative and emphasised the importance of inclusive planning. He said: “We’re proud to be working with RNIB to ensure our streets are designed for everyone. Experiencing the town centre through the lens of someone with sight loss was incredibly powerful. It’s vital that our infrastructure addresses the needs of all residents, and this partnership will help us embed inclusive design into future highways and public realm improvements.”
