In 1988, art, music, athletics and swimming were among the activities undertaken by three young seamen who had just proved how able they all were.
The trio from Tameside Sea Cadets receiving Duke of Edinburgh awards were Leading Seaman Paul Turner, 15, of Tennyson Avenue, Dukinfield, Able Seaman Darren Hughes, 17 and Leading Seaman Mathew Osburn, 16, both from Ashton.
In the same month, a fellow cadet Able Seaman Stephen Edgar, of Timperley Road, Ashton had been chosen by the Ocean Youth Club to join a select crew for a trip around the Norwegian fjords on the 76ft ketch Greater Manchester Challenge.
