Six thousand residents in Ashton, Droylsden, Hyde and Longdendale were being invited to help make the borough a greener place with the launch of the North West's first newspaper recycling scheme.
Householders would be asked to take delivery of a blue bin, slightly slimmer than the standard ‘wheelies’ to fill with their discarded newspapers and magazines.The new bins would be collected once a month.
Council leader Roy Oldham said those taking part in the pilot scheme ‘will be making a significant contribution to natural conservation and proving that recycling has a vital role to play in preserving our increasingly scarce natural resources.’
In 1995, 25 per cent of the paper used to produce the Reporter, North Cheshire Herald and Glossop Chronicle was recycled - with a target of 40 per cent by the year 2000.
