Weeks of hard work paid off for members of St Hilda’s Church, Audenshaw, with hundreds flocking to see one of Coronation Street’s best loved characters open the annual garden party.
Crowds of Corrie fans, young and old, were waiting to meet Jack Duckworth - actor Bill Tarmey - as he arrived at the church grounds on Denton Road. Almost an hour later the queue of autograph hunters showed no sign of diminishing.
The vicar Father John Kershaw and the organising team were delighted that he was able to stay to meet as many people as possible.
Bill’s appearance helped maintain a steady stream of customers to the stalls and sideshows which raised a record sum of £1,054. Another special guest was the Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Lena Eason, who drew the winning lucky programme number.
