New gallery space in Ashton

A new gallery which displays some of the best work from the local art community has opened in Ashton.

The Market Gallery in Ashton Market Hall opened last Friday (1 November) and showcases the work of local artists, as well as artworks and exhibits from Tameside’s Museums and Galleries service.

Vacant stalls at the rear of the market hall have been transformed into an art space, where students, local artists and creative businesses can showcase their creative talents and sell their work.

The project has been created through a partnership between Tameside Council’s markets, culture and museums services. 

The first exhibition features pieces by retired art teacher and local artist Martin Palmer, whose work includes local landscapes, portraits and still life. The Museums and Galleries service is also exhibiting works from its collection.

The Market Gallery will host a variety of work with exhibitions changing every three months, following the schedule below:

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council executive member for Lifelong Learning, Equalities, Culture and Heritage, said: “The Market Gallery is an exciting opportunity to share the talents of our local artists and will bring art right into the heart of our community. The new gallery is a welcome addition to Tameside’s cultural scene with numerous events and exhibitions taking place during the next 12 months, which I hope will be enjoyed by our residents.”
