Tameside Council has welcomed a new executive leader, Councillor Eleanor Wills, to steer the borough through a crucial period of change.
The Council’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) expressed their support for Cllr Wills in her new role, stating they are eager to work together on delivering the significant improvements needed, particularly in Children’s Services.
In a formal statement, the SLT confirmed that the process of appointing an Interim Chief Executive has begun. Cllr Wills, alongside the full Executive Cabinet, including both new and returning members, will soon call an Appointments Panel to consider candidates. Among the options is a secondment from Oldham’s chief executive, offered by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, to provide leadership support during this period of transition.
The SLT highlighted the importance of following due process and reassured staff that their efforts remain crucial as the council moves forward.
In her first statement as executive leader, Cllr Wills said: “To everyone in Tameside, I make this promise: we hear your frustration, and change is coming. My new team and I are listening, and whilst the challenge ahead is huge, so is the opportunity.”
She emphasised the need for strategic and cultural changes, not just in Children’s Services but across the entire council: “With the support of my group and other members, officers, strategic partners, and the Commissioner, we will take bold steps to improve outcomes for our children.”
The formal appointment of the interim chief executive will be subject to decision-making at a Full Council meeting on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
