A housing development of 50 new homes could be built on the site of a former Tameside high school.

Plans have been lodged with the council to redevelop the land which previously housed the Mossley Hollins High School, off Huddersfield Road in Mossley.

The area has stood empty since Mossley Hollins moved to a new £20.4 million site across the road in 2011. Approval to demolish the former school was granted in 2012.

The land is in the green belt, but allocated as an ‘existing developed site’. It was sold by the council to Great Places Housing Group for more than £2m.

Cube Homes, which is the private sector arm of Great Places, is proposing a new development of 50 homes on the site.

Under the proposals, access to the new estate would be created off Huddersfield Road through a new entry point.

A previous application for up to 41 properties on the site had been approved by Tameside council in 2017, but not implemented.

Under the latest plans the development would be split between 12 three bedroom and 38 four bedroom homes.

It would include a 20pc affordable housing provision comprising of ten shared ownership units, and each house would have a minimum of two car parking spaces.

The majority of the houses would be two storey, with a split level house type which would extend to two and a half storeys to respond to level changes on the rear of the site.

Cube is also proposing to plant 50 native trees and new hedgerows and shrubs, however five individual trees and five groups are trees are proposed to be cut down to facilitate the building work.

“The proposals will secure the delivery of up to 50 new family homes which will assist in meeting an identified unmet need and will contribute towards the borough’s five-year housing land supply position,” a supporting planning document states.

“The proposals will support the creation of strong, vibrant and healthy communities by increasing the supply of housing and delivering new homes which meet the needs of Mossley.”

A decision on the plans is expected by the end of October.
