Minds Education: the Mossley school making a difference

Minds Education Mossley is quietly transforming the educational landscape in Tameside, offering a fresh, supportive approach for young people who need something different from mainstream schooling.

Now in its second year, the school was founded by experienced educator Tonye Selema, whose background spans roles from teaching assistant to qualified biology teacher and senior leadership. After years working with some of the North West’s largest education providers, Tonye recognised a gap closer to home.

“There was very little provision like this in Mossley and Tameside,” he explains. “I wanted to bring something local that truly supports students who don’t thrive in mainstream settings.”

What began as an alternative provision has quickly grown. Minds Education Mossley is now progressing toward full status as an independent special school, registered with the Department for Education and working closely with local authorities and partner schools across Tameside and Oldham.

A Personalised Approach

At the heart of Minds Education is its commitment to small class sizes and individual support. With just four to five students per class, staff can build strong relationships and tailor learning to each young person’s needs.

“In a mainstream classroom of 30, it’s easy for some students to get lost,” says Tonye. “Here, we create a calmer environment where every student is seen and supported.”

The school caters for students aged 11 to 16 and offers a broad, balanced curriculum. Alongside core subjects such as maths and English language and literature, students can study biology, PE (both theory and practical), and citizenship, ensuring they still have access to a full educational experience.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

What truly sets Minds Education apart is its focus on enrichment and real-world experiences. The school day blends structured academic learning with opportunities to grow in confidence and life skills.

Afternoons often include physical activity, trips, or enrichment sessions. Students have already experienced activities such as ice skating, indoor skydiving, and go-karting - opportunities many may never otherwise have had.

“These experiences can be life-changing,” Tonye explains. “For some of our students, it’s the first time they’ve been able to take part in trips like these.”

Incentives are personalised, recognising that every student’s journey is different. Whether improving attendance, building confidence, or developing academic focus, progress is celebrated in ways that matter to each individual.

A Calm, Inspiring Setting

The school’s Mossley location adds another unique dimension. Set against stunning views of the surrounding hills, the environment itself plays a role in students’ wellbeing.

“It’s a very calming space,” says Tonye. “You don’t get the noise and rush of a typical school. The atmosphere helps students feel more settled and ready to learn.”

Referrals and Admissions

Students typically join Minds Education through referrals from schools or local authorities, although parents can initiate the process by speaking with their child’s current school. Visits and consultations ensure the placement is the right fit for each student.

As the school continues to grow, new specialist staff are joining the team, further strengthening its ability to provide high-quality, tailored education.

For families across Tameside seeking a supportive, personalised alternative, Minds Education Mossley is proving that with the right environment, every young person can succeed.
