Memories sought for Grays reunion night in Stalybridge

Pop fans can step back in time and relive the golden era of a legendary Stalybridge nightspot.

A Grays reunion night on Saturday 17 June at the New Bower Fold Events Lounge aims to bring back the good times for anyone who remembers strutting their stuff on the dancefloor in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. You can even request your favourite song.

Launched in 1979, Grays Bistrotheque promised “a new concept in disco dining” strictly for over-21s.

In March 1983 a racing car was the last thing revellers expected to find inside their favourite venue.

Grays was sponsoring local driver Dave Preston who was aiming to win the northern championship.

The following year the Reporter revealed the venue was aiming to set a new world record - for smashing up unwanted old pianos.

Despite a blaze of publicity the idea failed to hit the right note with the public. The event was scrapped after only one piano was donated.

John Medhurst, who now lives in Northern Ireland was the resident DJ at Grays for five years until it was sold in 1992. He recalled popular themed events including a Club 18-30 T-shirt party night.

New Bower Fold Events are asking anyone with photos or memorabilia of the Grays era to get in touch.

A recent nostalgia night in early May was a huge success. As a result, the tickets (priced £10) are already selling quickly.
