Greater Manchester Police Officers responded to reports of an assault on Bow Street, Ashton Under-Lyne this morning and located a man in his early 30s with serious injuries.
Despite best efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
One man, aged 36, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Superintendent Ian McNabb said: "This was a violent and shocking attack that tragically took the life of a young man. Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.
"As we are still in the early stages of our investigation, we are appealing for anyone who may have information to please come forward and report."
