Man arrested on suspicion of drink driving

A man has been arrested in Ashton on suspicion of drink driving, driving with no licence and driving with no insurance.

Police Constable Martin Jones, from Greater Manchester Police's Tameside North team, said officers were dealing with an unrelated matter at Cavendish Mill at around 9am this morning (Thursday) when they were alerted to two men drinking alcohol inside a nearby car.

The car, a blue Renault, set off from Bank Street as police approached the vehicle and officers managed to detain the passenger but the driver made off on foot.

After a short pursuit on foot, PC Jones said the driver was detained nearby.

The 24-year-old is currently in custody conducting a drink-drive procedure and awaits questioning.

The car has been seized for having no insurance.
