Exciting new plans to transform Ashton town centre are gathering pace, with Tameside Council preparing to launch the search for a development partner in the coming months.
A new vision and framework for the town are set to go before the Council’s Executive Cabinet for approval. If agreed, this will mark the next step in an ambitious programme to create a vibrant, modern town that provides more homes, improved transport, and new spaces for businesses and the community.
The Council aims to appoint a development partner by spring 2026 to help deliver the long-term regeneration project.
The proposals set out a series of major changes that could reshape the town centre, including:
- Up to 2,400 new homes, creating a lively community in the heart of the town.
- Around 12.5 hectares of commercial space to support local businesses and create jobs.
- Greater Manchester’s first Bee Network Station, integrating Metrolink, buses and trains to make travel easier and more sustainable.
Ashton’s location just seven miles from Manchester, combined with its strong transport links, affordable housing and green spaces, makes it well placed to attract investment and growth.
The regeneration plans will focus on:
- Revitalising the high street with a mix of shops, cafés, workspaces and community services.
- Improving public spaces to make the town safer, greener and more attractive.
- Creating affordable workspaces and cultural venues to encourage local enterprise and creativity.
- Building new homes to support businesses and bring more people into the town centre.
The framework also builds on the improvements already underway in Market Square, with the ambition of bringing together key areas within the Ashton Mayoral Development Zone, such as St Petersfield and the shopping centres, under a single vision for the future.
Consideration is also being given to whether the developer’s remit should be expanded to include opportunities in Droylsden town centre, aligning with the Droylsden Masterplan Framework approved earlier this year. This will be explored further during the soft market testing stage.
Councillor Andrew McLaren, Deputy Leader (Growth, Housing and Homelessness), said: “A development partner will help us move faster with our plans for Ashton. By connecting public and private sites, we’re laying the groundwork for real growth. We’re looking for developers with experience in Greater Manchester who understand the challenges and opportunities. We’re excited to share what’s ahead.”
