Little Picassos are art masters

Children from Ravensfield Primary School with Mayor Shibley Alam and consort Mr Khairul Alam.

Dukinfield’s Ravensfield Primary School celebrated their very own Arts Award presentation.

Students and staff welcomed special guests Councillor Shibley Alam, the Civic Mayor of Tameside; the mayor’s consort Mr Khairul Alam; councillor for Lifelong learning and Culture, councillor Leanne Feeley; as well as local ward councillor Naila Sharif.

The event celebrated the hard work of Year 5 pupils, each undertaking lots of learning which resulted in them achieving their Arts Award DISCOVER.

Some of the arts-based activities involved working with professional artist Sam Hull, where each pupil learned new creative processes that they could use to support their emotional health and wellbeing.

Pupils were able to master new techniques, learn all about Sam and ‘Staying Safe’ whilst creating their own individual canvases.

Mrs Evans, class teacher, said: “We really enjoyed the opportunity to work with a local artist. We focussed on abstract art which meant the children were given the freedom to be creative without the pressure of having to draw something real.

“They loved creating their canvasses and it was amazing to see that every canvas looked different.”

Arts Award is vital in supporting young people to develop as artists and arts leaders in their communities, and Tameside is committed to helping young people achieve their goals by providing opportunities and support for them to flourish and develop within their chosen artistic pathway.

The Arts Award is facilitated through the support of both Tameside Council’s Cultural and Community Safety Services - who support and work to improve young people’s lives by increasing opportunities for active participation in arts, culture and creative learning.
