'Last-stitch appeal' for Scouts' knitting project

Scouting creations are on the ‘homestitch’… but your help is still needed

North Tameside Scouts are making a ‘last-stitch appeal’ in their quest to create every Scout member across the District - entirely from wool.

As previously reported, North Tameside Scouts launched their community project to create a miniature knitted Scout for every member in the district, celebrating the anniversaries of the Squirrel, Beaver and Cub sections this year.

The 'Knitted Scout Project' invited volunteers, supporters and craft enthusiasts to ‘knit together’ and help produce the 500 plus handmade Scout figures needed, which will go on display at Linnet Clough Scout Campsite this autumn.

Now the appeal is just a few stitches away from completion, with only a handful of characters still required.

The final figures needed are:

2nd Ashton – 8 Cubs

6th Ashton – 6 Scouts

2/1st Hurst – 16 Scouts

3rd Ashton – 8 Cubs, 5 Scouts and 4 Explorers

250th Manchester – 2 Squirrels, 3 Cubs, 13 Scouts and 20 Explorers

413th Manchester – 1 Cub, 6 Scouts and 13 Explorers

339th – 11 Squirrels, 13 Beavers and 3 Explorers

To encourage participation, North Tameside Scouts has produced a range of knitting and crochet patterns suitable for all skill levels, from experienced crafters to complete beginners.

The finished display at Linnet Clough will celebrate not only the anniversaries of the younger Scout sections, but also the contribution made by volunteers and young people across the District.

North Tameside Scouts currently supports members across all sections, including Squirrel Scouts (aged 4–6), Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Young Leaders and adult volunteers.

Organisers say the project is designed to celebrate Scouting while bringing people together, one stitch at a time, through traditional crafts such as knitting and crochet.

North Tameside Scouts is encouraging anyone interested in helping to come forward, whether by making one knitted Scout or several.
