Knifeman goes AWOL from open prison

Police are hunting a knife-wielding robber from Tameside who has gone on the run from open prison.

Michael Gilworth, formerly of Hyde, absconded from Spring Hill Prison near Aylesbury at around 8:45pm on Thursday February 27.

The 38-year-old was jailed for 10 years in 2020 for robbery, burglary and possession of a blade after robberies on successive days at the McColls convenience store on Astley Street, Dukinfield.

He leapt over the counter and took several bottles of spirits during the first robbery on September 5, 2020.

The following day he threatened a female member of shop staff – who was working alone - with a knife, before stealing cigarettes and the till and leaving the worker “frightened and distressed”.

Police describe Gilworth as 6ft tall, of slim build, with ginger hair, a beard and several tattoos, including one of a goblin on his upper left arm, a fish tattoo on his lower left arm and “Lewis” on his right hand.

He was last seen getting into a blue Ford Mondeo, wearing a light blue jumper, dark trousers and a black beanie hat.

Detective Constable Melanie Cannon of Thames Valley Police said: "If you see Gilworth, do not approach him and call 999 instead."
