Greater Manchester Police has been assigned Level 1 status in the new national Police Performance System introduced by the Home Office.
Level 1 status is the highest-performing category and is the default position reserved for forces where no action or intervention is required.
Today’s announcement reflects the ongoing efforts of thousands of police officers, police staff, volunteers and contractors who have worked tirelessly to strengthen our force and improve the service we provide to the public.
For GMP, this latest assessment marks another significant milestone in the force’s improvement journey.
Just five years ago, GMP was placed into Special Measures following serious concerns identified by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.
Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson QPM said: "This outcome is a source of considerable encouragement and one in which every member of the GMP family can take legitimate pride.
"Whilst this is an occasion upon which we should reflect with some satisfaction, we should also recognise that performance is not a destination but a continuing endeavour. The communities we serve rightly expect us to strive constantly for improvement and we remain ambitious and restless in that pursuit.
"There is great honour in what we do. Every day, across Greater Manchester, colleagues make a tangible difference to people's lives through their commitment to protecting the vulnerable, pursuing offenders and keeping our communities safe.”
