Get moving with chair-based exercise in Tameside

Staying active doesn’t have to mean standing and for many in Tameside, chair-based exercise is proving to be a lifeline for both physical and mental wellbeing.

Fitness instructor Suzanne Dempster, based in Ashton-under-Lyne, runs weekly chair-based exercise sessions at both Age UK and care homes across Tameside every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30–2:30pm.

For many older adults or those with limited mobility, staying active can feel like an impossible goal. But chair-based exercise helps keep people active.

Suzanne Dempster told us: “Chair exercise is a way of allowing people who have less mobility to still do effective exercise.

“Even after 65, the Department of Health recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, along with strength training twice a week. That doesn’t stop just because someone can’t stand unaided.”

The classes are tailored to suit different levels of mobility. A typical session includes joint mobilisation, strength training with resistance bands, gentle cardiovascular routines and a cool-down stretch. And, there’s even some dancing involved.

Suzanne said: “It’s basically a full gym workout, just adapted for those who may not have the balance or strength to stand for long.”

“Even if you’re in your 90s, you can still exercise.” Suzanne says. “We focus on strength, movement, and cardio all from a chair. It helps with independence, sleep, and social interaction.”

Each class includes strength training with resistance bands, light cardio to music, stretching, and just as important, a cuppa and a chat afterwards. It’s not just about movement. It’s also about mental wellbeing and community.

“At the end of my classes, they’re not happy if they don’t get a cup of tea,” she laughs. “They bring cakes for birthdays, they chat, they know each other’s names. Some of them live alone and this is the highlight of their day.”

Suzanne also told us that exercise is well known to improve sleep patterns, reduce stress, and boost mood. Her classes not only get people moving, but also get them connecting.

Suzanne’s advice to anyone unsure about joining is don’t be afraid.

“Exercise can be done at any age. I’ve had 94-year-olds in my classes! You don’t need to be an Olympic gymnast. We meet you where you are. You’ll feel supported and you’ll improve. It’s something to look forward to, a nice, sociable day out.”

Suzanne also offers home visits for those who are unable to leave the house, providing sessions ranging from 20 minutes to an hour.
