Police have launched an investigation into alleged offences in connection to the local elections in Tameside earlier this month.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed this morning that five people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud following concerns raised around candidates standing in the St Peter’s ward during the recent local elections.
The arrests took place at addresses across Tameside earlier today. Four men and one woman, aged between 23 and 47, remain in custody for questioning.
According to police, reports were received both before and after the May 7 election regarding concerns surrounding candidates within the ward.
Following initial enquiries last week, detectives have now launched a full investigation into whether the process used to put forward and represent candidates complied with electoral law and official procedures.
In a statement issued this afternoon, police said:
“In the days leading up to and following the election on May 7, we received reports surrounding concerns about candidates within the St Peter’s ward.
“Following initial enquiries last week, we have launched a full investigation into the allegations.
“The work is specifically investigating the process of how candidates were put forward and represented in the ward, and if this adhered to the relevant legislation and electoral procedures.”
Greater Manchester Police say they are working closely with the Electoral Commission and local partners as enquiries continue.
No charges have currently been brought and investigations remain ongoing.
