Matt Cripps from Denton, the Head Chef at Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford, has completed the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride to raise money for charity.
Cripps undertook the 60-mile ride in swelteringly hot temperatures of 34 degrees. Despite the heat, Cripps completed the ride in an impressive six-and-a-half hours.
The 46-year-old cycled from MediaCityUK in Salford Quays to Blackpool’s South Promenade, raising more than £700 for Broughton House, which provides care and support for veterans and their families.
To prepare for the challenge, Matt followed a strict six-week training programme that included swimming, cycling, running on a treadmill, and rowing machine workouts. He also consumed a high-protein diet and endured regular dips in his outdoor ice bath.
Reflecting on the ride, Cripps said: “The training really helped, but it felt like I’d hit a brick wall around Preston. I pushed myself and cracked on because I was determined to see it through to the very end for such a great cause.
“I did get sunburnt, but had an ice bath when I arrived home, which helped me cool down and recover.”
Karen Miller, chief executive of Broughton House, praised his efforts, saying, “Matt’s dedication to raising funds for our veterans epitomises the camaraderie and community spirit that Broughton House is well-known for.
“We’re all incredibly proud of Matt for his fantastic achievement, and the charity will ensure that monies raised will contribute to the ongoing care and support of our veterans, both in the home and within our local community.”
Matt’s JustGiving page is still live and accepting donations. Broughton House supports those who’ve served in His Majesty’s Armed Forces and their families.
