In his latest column, the Tameside Radio presenter looks back on his chat about Alias Kidd and the influence on Manchester music.
Earlier on in the year, in this weekly column, I wrote about Alias Kid, the Manchester band who, over the years, have played their own game, and not followed the rules, route, or trends of other bands.
Their look, attitude, music, swagger, and live shows define rock ‘n’ roll, and as well as producing some classic Mancunian timeless anthems, are an amazing set of lads to be around. If you can handle them that is.
After pulling out of a pre-pandemic sold out Manchester date last minute in 2019, and going off the rails in only a way Alias Kid can, the band had made a return earlier this year that saw them more solid, and determined, than ever before.
The beginning of the year saw the band, consisting of Sean O’Donnell, Maz Behdjet, Chris Livesey, and Colin Ward, joined by American guitarist and producer Tony Long, who with a heavy guitar sound and quality no nonsense production skills gave the band the sound they had been searching for.
They released ‘Through The Night’, a well received single that brought the band back to life and gained them a new army of fans. Then last month came the start of the next chapter.
Creation Records legendary manager Alan McGee, who had long been a supporter and fan of the band, announced that he had signed the band to his label.
In true Alan McGee and Alias Kid style, the contract was signed on the back of a food menu when they met up for dinner, and a new era for the band was born.
This weekend Alias Kid release one of the best singles of the year. If you could put all of the greatest rock riffs, loud glam rock, and Alias Kid in a blender, you would end up with the masterpiece in which they are about to release.
‘Out With The Boys’ is one of the most anthemic songs I’ve ever heard, and only Alias Kid could do such a song justice. It’s loud, it’s raw, it’s mind blowing. It’s Alias Kid at their very best.
As far as the future goes for the band, who knows, this isn’t any normal band, this is Alias Kid. Knowing the lads as I do, one thing for sure is that they seem more determined than ever to make themselves heard, and there is no doubt about it, they will do it in their own way.
Locally, a main slot on the main stage at next year’s Romiley Made in Manchester festival has been announced, and more live dates are promised for 2022. Otherwise, we’ll have to wait and see.
In the meantime, check out ‘Out With The Boys’ when it gets released this weekend. It really is Rock ‘n’ Roll at its loudest, and best.
