Tameside residents are being urged to have their say on proposals to create safer spaces for cycling and walking in the borough.
Tameside Council was successful in a bid to secure Government funding for schemes that will give people more opportunities to choose cycling and walking for their day-to-day journeys.
A consultation on three of the latest Active Travel Fund schemes has been launched so that residents have the opportunity to help improve the schemes and their neighbourhood.
The projects have been designed to improve walking and cycling connections and will support commuter and leisure journeys by introducing segregated cycle lanes.
The proposed schemes will make up a key part of the Bee Network, GM’s vision for an integrated public transport system, which includes cycling and walking, and will enable more people to switch to active travel for everyday journeys.
Walking and cycling are not only better for both physical and mental health, helping people keep fit and active, they are also better for the environment by reducing congestion and improving air quality.
Evidence also shows that improvements to walking and cycling infrastructure will achieve economic benefits for retailers and local businesses by increasing footfall in town centre environments.
Ward councillors have visited the sites to discuss the plans and are urging local residents to take part in the consultation to ensure the best possible schemes are designed.
Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Planning, Transport and Connectivity, Cllr Jan Jackson said: “Residents in the borough are best placed to know what their neighbourhoods need, and Tameside Council welcome you to have your say on improving our walking and cycling infrastructure. The schemes proposed will make it easier, safer, fun and more attractive to travel on foot or by bike. It will also help people make walking and cycling the first choice for short journeys.
“Walking and cycling are healthier, greener, more sustainable travel options and these investments will create a healthier environment for all.”

Richard Nickson, Programme Director for Cycling and Walking at TfGM, said: “We want to make travelling on foot or by bike a safe and pleasant experience across all Greater Manchester.
“Tameside’s proposals will make life easier for people who want to ride, scoot or simply walk for short trips or to public transport, which will help improve our air quality, mental and physical health and save people money.
“I’d encourage residents in Tameside to get involved in the consultation and have their say on these improvements.”
