Clarendon Sixth Form student races ahead with Formula 1 designs

Robbie Rigby

A student from Clarendon Sixth Form College in Ashton is on the grid in a Formula 1 team's worldwide design competition.

Robbie Rigby, a former Copley Academy student and current level three graphic design student at the college, is one of only five people chosen as a winner in Red Bull Racing's Miami Grand Prix design competition.

Robbie, who is a keen Formula 1 fan, entered the competition to design the livery of the team’s car which would take part in the race.

The brief was to create a car that represented Miami’s vibrant culture and also the team’s passion for racing.

Using the skills learnt during his studies, he created a design which was selected by Red Bull’s directors as one of the five winners.

His creation has been digitally modelled onto the car on the team’s social media channels and will now go on display in an exhibition in Miami.

The five winners were chosen from around 100 finalists and 10,000 entries.

To create his designs, Robbie sketched out his ideas, consulted his friends and fellow F1 fans and then formed his final design digitally.

Robbie said: “When I entered the competition, I didn’t think I had got that far and when it took a while for Red Bull to get in touch I just assumed my design wasn’t picked, so to find out that my design was one of the winners was amazing.

"I’m a huge Formula 1 fan and my design has now been seen by millions so I’m quite proud of it. It proves to me that the skills I’ve learnt whilst studying at college do work.”

He has now been offered a place at the University of Huddersfield to study graphic design, and hopes to become a professional designer for the motorsport industry in the future.

Harry Arnold, graphic design teacher at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “Robbie is a very hard working and creative student who has done extremely well in this competition. To have your designs chosen by a huge multinational company to represent their brand, whilst still studying at college, is a huge achievement. Well done to him on his work.”
