On 10th April 2025 Hilda Vera Turner, known as Vera celebrated her 100th birthday.
Born in Ashton Hospital she moved to Stalybridge from Denton aged around 2 years old. Spending the majority of her life around the Ridge Hill area.
One of 4 children she was 14 when war broke out, at the same age she started work in the local mills.
Over the years Vera worked as a spinner in various cotton mills. She then went on to make slippers at Futura and towels at Ashton bros in Hyde. Her last job before retiring was as a cleaner at Beaufort Road College.

Vera married Eric in 1946 and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage before he passed away in 2001. She is adored by her 3 children and has 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
She enjoys her bingo group at St Peters and tunes in to 'Tipping Point' on TV every day. She's an avid reader of Catherine Cookson books and can knit and sew anything!
According to her the secret of a long life is to enjoy plenty of chocolate!
