Carrbrook teen selected to perform with West End stars

Just a year after moving out of her family home at 16 to pursue her passion for performing arts, a Carrbrook teen was selected to perform alongside the "leading lady" of West End musicals.

Millie Wright, a former Mossley Hollins student, performed with musical theatre greats Kerry Ellis and John Owen-Jones last Thursday, July 4, at the annual Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

Kerry is best known for her award-winning performances as Nancy in 'Oliver!', Eliza Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady', Ellen in 'Miss Saigon' and Fantine in 'Les Misérables'. While John is known for his critically acclaimed role as Jean Valjean in 'Les Misérables' and as The Phantom in 'The Phantom of the Opera'.

Millie, who has just finished her first year at The Hammond, was chosen after the industry team at her college was approached by the Eisteddfod company organisers, who requested an ensemble of students to attend the festival alongside the duo.

The 17-year-old described the experience as "a wonderful opportunity", adding that it is just another great chance to learn more about the industry, the ways performers work and the various jobs available.

Reflecting on the past year living away from home in Chester, Millie said: "My first year has been amazing. It has had lots of highs and lots of lows. It's definitely been challenging adjusting to the intense schedule of the college but I've learnt so much and can't wait for my next two years.

"Moving out at 16 was challenging and not something I had anticipated for myself but it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have matured and grown as a person so much in this last year and I wouldn't change it for the world. I have had to learn a lot about myself, especially when missing home, but it has been so worth it."

And looking towards the future, Millie said she hopes to get an agent at the end of her graduation year before securing a role in a West End show, her dream one being Moulin Rouge, either as a swing, understudy or cover for a lead role.
