Carmel Community Church on Seymour Street, Denton, marked a remarkable milestone this past weekend, celebrating its 75th anniversary with a weekend full of memories, friendship, and gratitude.

The celebrations took place over the weekend of 4th and 5th October, bringing together past and present members to reflect on the lasting impact the church has had in the local community.

Guests enjoyed reminiscing over decades of church life through photographs and memorabilia, sparking conversations and fond memories of weddings, community events, and friendships formed through Carmel. The church wedding registers were also on display, allowing couples who tied the knot at Carmel to look back on their special day.

A highlight of the celebration was a presentation to two of the church’s longest-serving members, Brenda Humphries and Beryl Dixon, who have each been part of the Carmel family for over 60 years. They were honoured by the Mayoress of Tameside Shibley Alam, who thanked them for their outstanding service and commitment.

The Mayoress also expressed her appreciation for the church’s ongoing contribution to the Denton community, meeting both current minister Rev. Mark Thomas, who is retiring after 20 years of dedicated service, and incoming minister Rev. Catie-Anne Harper, who will lead the church into its next chapter.

Over the decades, Carmel Community Church has played a vital role in the lives of many local residents. Older members fondly recalled the red bus that travelled through Denton and Haughton Green during the 1960s, bringing children to Sunday school every week. Others remembered the parent and toddler group, launched in the 1970s, and Friends Fellowship, which provided meals, companionship, and laughter for the elderly and isolated for over two decades.

In more recent years, initiatives such as the Jigsaw Club, an after-school programme offering games, crafts, and tea, have continued Carmel’s tradition of creativity, care, and community spirit.

Today, Carmel Community Church describes itself as a multi-generational, “come as you are” church, continuing its mission to serve Denton and beyond. The church now offers a community café, a creative hub, a dads’ group, and a debt centre, alongside worship and pastoral support.

In a message to all who have been part of Carmel over the years, the church said: “We want to thank you for your commitment, dedication, and support which has carried us through the decades and brought us to where we are today.”
